Commercialising TREAT: Moving a University EDI Experiment into Industry1

TREAT (Teaching Realistic EDI and Telecommunications) is a practically-based education approach which uses a simulation/business game to teach participants how to use EDI for international trade. The TREAT approach has been tested initially in a university environment and, in this paper, the authors describe the process of moving TREAT into a commercial environment so that it can be tested on its ultimate audience the owner/managers of small to medium enterprises (SMEs). The paper initially highlights the differences between university students and SME owner/managers which will affect the operation of the simulation, incorporating the findings of several questionnaires completed by university students to support our assertions. We then discuss the implications of these findings for the commercial version of the TREAT business game, introducing the concept of the Laboratory Management System which is under development at present. Finally, the paper discusses possible future developments and further academic extensions to the current research project.
